about

Des Se Door (Away from Motherland) :
Lyrics : Vishwas Thoke, Music : Vandana Vishwas
Des Se Door literally means away from the motherland. Vandana wanted Vishwas to pen down a Thumri in traditional North Indian classic dialect of Hindi, and Vishwas turned Vandana’s incessant complaints about Canada’s long, chilly and icy winters; and a constant longing to relive the rapidly changing seasons of India (the country has six distinct seasons, one every couple of months) – into a Thumri in which an immigrant woman is complaining that her lover has brought her away from her six-seasoned motherland to a foreign land across seven oceans, that has eight months of winter and snow! As she started to compose it, Vandana wanted to emphasize the woman’s longing for homeland in a foreign country, for the opening and ending parts of the song, where the woman complains about the climatic monotony of her adopted homeland. So she decided to compose this part based on a typical Indian Raag using western instrumentation and harmonies, and ended up with Todi. As any World musicologist will tell you there are only a few Raags in Indian Classical Music which are representative of the contrast between Indian and western scales, as Todi, a unique mode that is altogether absent in western music. To Carson Freeman’s credit, (although it sounded weird to him at first), he played the Sax pieces in Todi with such emotion and subtlety in the end, that the Sax sounds blend with Indian sounds. Harmonized countermelodies provide further contrast for this part. For the Indian part of the song when the woman reminisces the six seasons in India, Vandana chose to compose corresponding parts based on one Raag for each season as stipulated in Indian Classical music, thus making it one of the rarest songs in Indian music history to feature seven Raags in a single song! Vandana begins with a melody based on Raag Basant, in a drut (fast) Teen Taal (sixteen beated rhythm cycle) for the spring season, from where she moves to Raag Shuddh Sarang for summer, Raag Malhar for the rainy season, Raag Malkauns for the autumn, Raag Shree for the winter season and ends the Indian part with Raag Kaafi . As the song goes back to western instrumentation, the melody moves back to Raag Todi, thus completing the cycle. Prasad Gondkar, Hasheel Lodhia and Ganesh Tanwade shine with Sitar, Flute and Tabla respectively.

lyrics

Lyrics :
Des se door le aaye Sajanwa, Saat samandar paar bideswa.
Des kee mohe yaad sataawe, har do maas jahaan nav-ritu aawe.

Chait Baisaakh Basant le aawe, man bhanwraa pulkit huee jaawe.
Jeth-Asadh jo agan lagaave, Madhur koyaliya geet sunaawe.
Sawan-Bhado barkha laawe, Sab sakhiyaan mil jhoolaa gaawe.
Asvin-Kaartik sarad suhaave, Har gar chamke deep jalawe.
Agahan-Poos hemant jo aawe, Seet-lahar tab man ko reshape.
Ant ma Maagh-O-Fagun bhaawe, Sab rang khelen Hori gaawe.

Aisan des ko chhod ke hum ka, Laaye bides anadi sajanwa.
Aath maas jahaan seet sataawe, Ghar ma sab bandi hoee jaawe.
Khol jharokha dekhoon jo baahar, Swet rang chahoon ore daraawe.

Des se door le aaye sajanwa...

Translation :
My beloved has taken me to a foreign country,
across seven oceans from my motherland;

Memories of my country haunt me,
where there is a new season every couple of months;

Chait-Baisakh (March-April) bring spring,
that makes the beetle of my heart sing;

Jeth-Asadh (May-June) light up fire,
the melodious cuckoo plays her Lyre;

Sawan-Bhado (July-August) bring rains along,
All of us friends on the hammocks, sing along;

Autumn adorns Asvin-Kartik (September-October),
every house shines with bright lamps (Diwali);

Agahan-Poos (November-December) bring the winter,
and the cold breeze brings shivers to all;

in the end, there come Magh-Fagun (January-February)
and everyone sings and plays Holi (Festival of colours)

leaving behind such a beautiful country,
my ignorant beloved has brought me to a foreign land;

Where the cold tortures eight months a year,
and everyone is prisoner in their homes;

if you open the window and dare to look outside,
the eternal whiteness scares you from all directions;

My beloved has taken me away from my homecountry...
